Biography
James Valentine is a broadcaster, writer, and television presenter with a career spanning several decades. He currently hosts Afternoons on ABC Radio Sydney, returning to the program in 2024 after previously presenting Breakfast and Afternoons for over 20 years. His broadcasting career began in the late 1980s as the host of The Afternoon Show on ABC TV, followed by work on TVTV, Good Morning Australia, and various ABC programs, including children’s television.
As a writer, James has authored several books, including the JumpMan sci-fi trilogy for young readers. His articles have been published in major Australian newspapers and magazines.
Music
Before moving into media, James was a professional saxophonist. He studied classical saxophone and jazz in Melbourne, performing with some of Australia’s most notable artists. In the 1980s, he played with Models, and later joined Absent Friends. He also toured and recorded with Jo Jo Zep & the Falcons, Wendy Matthews, Kate Ceberano, Pseudo Echo, Iva Davies, Richard Clapton, and Diesel.
James continues to perform as a jazz musician, leading an organ jazz-soul quartet. His latest project, James Valentine’s Upbeat Revue, is a high-energy theatre show combining storytelling, music, and humour. The show is currently touring, playing festivals and venues across Australia.
